Solid Performance at Le Mans Round of Carrera Cup GB

17 June 2017:

Porsche Carrera Cup GB teamed up with Porsche Carrera Cup France, GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux and a host of international guest entries to form a 61-cars field at the iconic Le Mans circuit in the Sarthe region of France, 15-17 June 2017 for round seven of the UK series.

2016 Rookie Champion and BRDC Rising Stars program member Charlie, from Belfast, NI, secured a third row starting grid position (P6) in 2017 Carrera Cup GB qualifying on Thursday following an encouraging show of pace during the morning practices sessions.

A multi-car incident at the front of the grid when the lights went out for the start of the 45-minute race on Saturday brought out the first yellow flag. Charlie had made a clean get away in his #928 Redline Racing 911 GT3 and was running up in P2 on lap one when he was clipped by the race leader, causing an immediate puncture and essential visit to the pits.

Re-joining the race in P53 and steadily picking his way up through the field, Charlie set the fastest lap of the race – a 4:07.241 mins – on the penultimate lap and took the chequered flag in a respectable P23. He remains second in the Drivers’ Championship standings on 109 points as the Carrera Cup GB teams now prepare for rounds eight and nine at Snetterton circuit, UK, on 28-30 July 2017.

Results: #928 Charlie Eastwood

Qualifying – Round 7 P6 – fastest lap 4:09.272 minutes (196.8 Kph)
Round 7 - Result P23 - 9 laps, best lap time 4:07.241 minutes (Fastest lap of the race on L8)

Charlie Eastwood comments:

“It was a hard race for us. I got off to one of my best starts of the season and ended up in P2 from starting in sixth. Unfortunately, we collided with the pole man and got a puncture. Doing a lap which is four minutes long with a puncture feels like a lifetime and we got in to the pits right at the back of the pack. To come back from 53rd to 23rd is a good result for the team and overall it was a vital points scoring race. It’s frustrating as we also got the fastest lap by 1.6 seconds, so we knew for sure we had the pace, but this is motorsport and it happens.

“We put everything in to it today and I would like to thank everyone in the Redline Racing team, my family and especially Sacred Coffee, for helping out this weekend.”
